Invented by Inuit and Aleut tribes in the Arctic territories of North America more than 5,000 years ago, the kayak was initially used primarily for hunting. The Greenlandic word qajaq actually translates literally as &#8220;hunting boat&#8221;.    <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The harsh conditions forced the hunters to build their kayaks with materials such as animal hides and skins, liberally smeared with whale blubber to make them waterproof.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even these very early models of kayaks show design differences similar to the modern boats we know today.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kayaks designed for fishing and hunting featured a wider and higher cockpit. And those used by the Inuit for long-distance travel were shallower and longer, like the modern touring kayaks we paddle. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evolution of kayaks<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2081 alignleft lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/wildfunclub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/t-canyon2-300x222.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"222\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/wildfunclub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/t-canyon2-300x222.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wildfunclub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/t-canyon2-600x444.jpg 600w, https:\/\/wildfunclub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/t-canyon2.jpg 620w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/222;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The kayak found its way to Europe in the early 1800s in the form of a fabric-covered boat structure.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kayaking, as a sport, begins<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was gaining popularity in Western Europe at the same time. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To this day, kayaks continue to be used as a means of transport in icy waters, and for expeditions to the North and South Poles, are part of the equipment for getting across partially frozen rivers<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Rowing for pleasure, on the other hand, began its real development only in the middle of the XIX century, when it was popularized by the British John MacGregor. In 1873, he became a popular writer in the United States. The material makes the boats lighter, but at the same time more durable.
